Radiation Protection in Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology focuses on the professional, operational, and regulatory aspects of radiation protection. Advances in radiation medicine have resulted in new modalities and procedures, some of which have significant potential to cause serious harm. Examples include radiologic procedures that require very long fluoroscopy times, radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies, and intravascular brachytherapy.

This book summarizes evidence supporting changes in consensus recommendations, regulations, and health physics practices associated with these recent advances in radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology. It supports intelligent and practical methods for protection of personnel, the public, and patients.

The book is based on current recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection and is complemented by detailed practical sections and professional discussions by the world’s leading medical and health physics professionals.

It also includes substantial information on international aspects of radiation protection, with sections covering Africa, Asia and Oceania, the European Union, the Middle East, and North and Latin America.

"…It is vital that education about medical radiation protection encompass the principles and practices of all members of the world community. Radiation Protection in Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology, a member of the CRC Series in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, represents an important contribution to this goal. Not only does this new text cover the radiation protection aspects of the major modalities employed in diagnostics radiology and radiation oncology, it does so from the perspective of radiation protection professionals representing the six inhabited continents.
Edited by two accomplished medical physicists with international standing, the book consists of contributions from 34 professionals from the ranks of medical physics, health physics, and clinical radiology…Although intended to be a text for medical physics students, this book would be a useful reference for all types of radiation protection professionals at all career levels…While global harmonization of medical radiation protection philosophy and regulations may be a long way off, this excellent book brings us closer to that day."
—Robert E. Reiman, Ph.D, in Health Physics, September 2016

"The book presents a unique view on the subject. It is written by experts in the field—a collaboration between IOMP and IRPA. … The content and structure of the book are excellent. … The book will be a very useful reference for various specialists for many years ahead. … Throughout this book, the reader will find lots of data, tables, and diagrams. This is an excellent reference, which will be useful in all medical physics department."
