Marine eutrophication has been recognized as a global problem with adverse effects on ecosystem’s health and the economies of coastal states. Most conventions regarding marine environmental protection of Regional Seas have given priority to eutrophication and relevant management practices. This book presents a global perspective of eutrophication in most of the Regional Seas, including the legal framework, assessment and management practices. Information on ecosystem’s impact as well as an outline of the methods used for assessing eutrophication is also provided. This volume will be useful to research students, marine scientists and policy makers working in marine environmental management.

    Key Features:

    • Contributes to the understanding of the eutrophication processes and problems

    • Presents an extensive account of the data analysis methods used for the quantitative assessment of eutrophication

    • Looks the eutrophication status of the main regional seas

    • Provides information on eutrophication politics and measures to mitigate eutrophication

The Nature of Eutrophication. Data Analysis Methods for Assessing Eutrophication. Eutrophication and Governance of the Regional Seas. Eutrophication Status in the Regional Seas.

    Biography

Michael Karydis studied natural sciences in the University of Athens, Greece (BSc 1973) and specialized in phytoplankton ecology and toxicology in the University of North Wales, UK (PhD 1978). He worked as a researcher on marine eutrophication in the Nuclear Research Center "Democritus" and the National Center for Marine Research (Greece). He is a professor in the University of the Aegean, Greece, in marine environmental quality. For several years he has been publishing work in marine eutrophication. He has also offered his expertise to international organizations and institutions.

Dimitra Kitsiou is Associate Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of the Aegean, Greece. She studied Physics at the University of Athens, Greece and holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of the Aegean, Greece. Her research interests focus on the development of methodologies using modern expertise for the study of the coastal environment, the spatio-temporal assessment of marine eutrophication as well as on coastal zone management and marine spatial planning. She has participated in many national and international research projects and has offered her services as an international expert in the European Union and other international organizations.
