Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book presents the latest international research on this area, with contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at an international RILEM workshop.

Preface. On the abnormal freezing of pore water and testing on freeze-thaw and de-icing salt resistance. De-icing salt scaling resistance of high-performance concrete: an overview. On the service life of concrete exposed to frost action. Three different methods for testing the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete with and without de-icing salt - European round robin test. Freeze-thaw resistance and de-icing salt resistance of concrete made with cements of different C3A contents. Efficiency of sealers on the scaling resistance of concrete in presence of de-icing salts. Mass loss experience with ASTM C666: with and without de-icing salt. High-strength concrete without air entertainment: effect of rapid temperature cycling above and below 0C. The de-icer salt scaling deterioration of concrete: the Quebec Ministry of Transportation's point of view. Internal comparative tests on frost de-icing salt resistance. De-icing salt scaling resistance of concrete incorporating supplementary cementing materials: CANMET research. Frost/salt scaling and ice formation of concrete: effect of curing temperature and silica fume on normal and high-strength concrete. Scaling resistance tests of concrete - experience from practical use in Sweden. Round robin tests on concrete frost resistance. Reliability of the ASTM C 672 test method: comparison between the laboratory de-icer scaling resistance of concrete and its behaviour under field exposure conditions. Author index. Subject index.
