The second edition of this well established book has been comprehensively updated in line with recent developments. After presenting the fundamentals of stress and strain, and their graphical representation, the book includes chapters on failure states in soils and rocks, observed and elastic paths, and the use of discontinuities.

New sections include shear bands and small strain behaviour, as well as the use of elastic shear modular stress calculations and discontinuities in plasticity calculations. Expanded coverage is also given to dilitancy of soils and roughness of rock joints.

    1. Stresses, Strains and Mohr Circles  2. Failure States in Soil  3. Failure in Rock  4. Applied Laboratory Stress Paths  5. Elastic Stress Paths and Small Strains  6. The Use of Stress Discontinuities in Undrained Plasticity Calculations  7. The Use of Stress Discontinuities in Drained Plasticity Calculations  8. Stress Characteristics and Slip Lines

    Biography

    R. H. G. Parry, previously Secretary General of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMGE). He has worked in a government research organisation, as a manager of a geotechnical investigation form, as a university lecturer and researcher, and as a consultant.

'A comprehensive range of worked examples is included...The book provides a clear description of the relevant techniques and the strengths and limitations of these techniques...written in a lively style, accompanied by a large number of illustrations...will be of considerable assistance to geotechnical engineers in teaching, research, and practice. It will remain a valuable reference for some time to come.' - Applied Mechanics Reviews

' The first book devoted to this subject, this gives a unified presentation of the theory and application of the techniques.' - The Structural Engineer
