Author Q&A Session: Charles Goslin

CRC Press is pleased to share with you our author Q&A session with Charles Goslin, author of Understanding Personal Security and Risk: A Guide for Business Travelers

Q&A with Charles Goslin

Congratulations on the publication of your book! What do you want your audience to take away from the book?
I want my audience to understand that this book was a thoughtful, deliberate “unpacking” of my lifetime of experience in international travel and living, where personal security and safety were paramount themes of my life. I eschew catchy slogans & clichés about personal security (such as the hackneyed phrase ‘keep your head on a swivel’) and instead articulate carefully why certain principles, and concepts are important to understand.  This is a serious book.  It is not a collection of war stories from life abroad as an intelligence officer.   I do hope readers get that, and come away feeling that they have a “portable set of wisdom” in terms of travel safety and security that they can commit to memory.

What inspired you to write this book?
My inspiration to write this book was not of the “burning bush” variety.  Rather, it was the gradual culmination of my many experiences and insights into personal security accumulated over decades.  A friend and colleague whom I respect encouraged me to write it, and it had ripened to the point where it was indeed time to put pen to paper.

Why is your book relevant to your field of study of international security and intelligence operations in the present day? And how do you think your field is evolving today?
My field of study and work is international security and intelligence operations – I teach and mentor professionals in this discipline.  An integral part of this kind of work is keeping yourself, or by extension individuals for whom you are responsible, safe and secure in potentially volatile or hostile environments.   This theme is equally relevant to private sector industries, such as Oil & Gas, who have a significant multi-national presence in remote or developing areas of the globe.

The discipline of Personal Security, I think, is evolving in a positive way.  Security professionals, whether their roots are within the law enforcement sector or intelligence, increasingly recognize the importance of having an in-depth personal security program as part of their training & awareness responsibilities within the organization.  The days of sending business or intelligence professionals out the door, on an international trip, with a simple checklist or brochure consisting of pithy clichés about safety abroad are – hopefully – fading.  It is not enough, in this day and age.

What are the main developments in research that you’re seeing in your subject area of expertise? And how does your book relate to these recent developments?
To be frank, I don’t know – I actually do not think there is any serious research in this field.  There have been some popular books that rely heavily on the author’s previous tour or two with the CIA, or some other outfit (the military, for instance) to make a convincing case for personal security…but these books tend to rely heavy on war stories, and are light on serious iteration of principle, method and concept.  They are not serious, and do the discipline of personal security a disservice.

My book is a dense, in-depth look at the field of personal security that delves into the reasons for their principles, what works and what does not, and how they are practically applied.

What audience did you have in mind while writing you book?
The audience I had in mind when writing this book were twofold:  first, international business travellers who do not have the benefit of corporate security looking out for their interests when travelling abroad.  Second, corporate security officers who need a text that can be easily adapted to development and implementation of a personal security safety and security training/awareness program within the organization.

What makes your book stand out from its competitors?
As mentioned previously, my book is a dense, in-depth look at the field of personal security that delves into the reasons for their principles, what works and what does not, and how they are practically applied.  It is more a a textbook, illustrated in key areas with personal experience that is relevant.  It also covers a very broad range of scenarios, themes and situations that specifically apply to the business traveller.

Is there one piece of research included in the book which surprised you or challenged your previous understanding of the topic?
Yes, the extent and seriousness of the cyber threat to business travellers today.  Particularly the “Darkhotel” cyber threat, which is very relevant and a serious threat to our corporate sector.

What did you enjoy about writing the book?
Really delving in to what I’d always intuitively known but had not put into words.

About the Author

What is your academic background?
I have a B.A. in Political Science and History, and completed graduate coursework towards an MPA.

What is innovative about your research?
It is the field of security that, unlike most security disciplines, takes place “outside the walls of the castle”, so to speak.  It is also uniquely personal, in that to be effective, personal security must be internalized.

Who has influenced you the most?
Actually, those with the greatest influence on me are fellow case officers and colleagues who must remain anonymous, but whose experiences & fellowship over decades working abroad have had a significant impact.

What do you think are your most significant research accomplishments?
Developing a set of clear organizing concepts and principles that can successfully embrace the myriad situational themes that are part and parcel of personal security.

What first attracted you to your current field as an area of study?
I worked alongside physical security professionals and engineers, and was struck by the comparison of this very mature discipline of security (physical security), with its organizing principles & concepts, and the relatively lack of this in personal security.  Further, it was an area in which I felt I was uniquely qualified to contribute, given my background and experience.

Tell us an unusual fact about yourself and your teaching or writing style?
I worked full time as a newspaper reporter and stringer for the Associated Press, for four years, while at University.  This had a very strong influence, obviously, on my writing style.

What advice would you give to an aspiring researcher in your field?
Beware of clichés, hackneyed “phrases” and checklists.  These alone do not constitute personal security.  They are excuses for avoiding an in-depth program of awareness and training.  Also, they constitute, in my opinion, intellectual laziness and oftentimes arrogance.  Good corporate security professionals recognize them for what they are.

Do you have plans for future books? And what’s next in the pipeline for you?
I am finishing a novel related to international terrorism, and am planning a second – expanded – edition of the book “Understanding Personal Security & Risk:  A Guide for Business Travelers.”

What do you feel has been a highlight for you, in your career?
Intelligence operations abroad.

What do you see yourself doing in ten years' time?
Teaching and writing.

What is the last book you read (non-academic)?
Seven Pillars of Wisdom, by T.E. Lawrence.
Charles Goslin is a retired CIA operations officer who served throughout the world in a wide range of capacities that bridged covert technical and HUMINT operations. He continues actively consulting in retirement on international intelligence, security and risk issues faced by multinational corporations operating in some of the world’s most hostile regions. Charles experience offers unique value for the business traveler that must, out of necessity, venture into "Indian Country." His perspective is one drawn from years working in the trenches of the third-world, rather than the relative comfort of a Washington office. Charles has authored and published numerous white papers on the security threat and business risk issues, and lectures regularly on terrorist radicalization and the threat of jihadist groups to Europe and the U.S. He has worked abroad in India, Africa, Central & South America, Europe and the Middle East with personal experience in crisis management and evacuation of facilities and personnel on numerous occasions. His expertise has been solicited by national media, both broadcast and print.

Reviews

"[W]hy choose this [book]? Two reasons at least. First, Goslin has been there and done that, and he relates it and draws sensible and useful conclusions. For instance, he recalls the two 'genuine in-flight emergencies' that he has experienced. Second, from start to finish he puts his finger on what he calls 'the red-headed stepchild of the overall discipline of security', namely personal security training and awareness. He states the obvious, which does want stating: that personal security comes down to you, the traveller, and no other; tracking devices are all very well, but if you are the 'tip of the spear' of business development, in some obscure part of the world, you have to apply thought, beyond that 45 minute briefing you had before setting off from corporate security (or HR). Third, something else Goslin shrewdly points out; the world is 'increasingly insecure': for instance, kidnappers may go after mid-level employees, for smaller ransoms, rather than take longer to get millions for the senior exec captured…it takes homework, watching the terrain, and being observant for your self-defence." – Professional Security Magazine Online, Summer 2018
