Dr. Forman’s research focuses on oxidative stress and signal transduction, particularly the decline in antioxidant protection in aging that increases susceptibility to inflammation through altered Nrf2 and NF-kappa B signaling. Another major aspect of Dr. Forman’s research is investigating the role of oxidative stress in the pathology of sickle cell disease at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. He is also Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, University of California, Merced.

Biography

Henry Jay Forman was born and grew up in New York City. He is Research Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, University of California, Merced.  He received his B.A. in Chemistry from Queens College, City University of New York and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Columbia University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Duke University with Irwin Fridovich. Forman’s previous academic positions include University of Pennsylvania in Physiology, University of Southern California in Pediatrics, Pathology , and Molecular Toxicology, and the University of Alabama, where he was the Chairman of Environmental Health Sciences. Forman is Past President of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine and is now Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Dr. Forman has taught a broad range of subjects including organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physiology.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Dr. Forman’s research is in oxidative stress and signal transduction. His did pioneering work in mitochondrial superoxide production in which he demonstrated that manganese superoxide dismutase actually pulls the reaction forward, redox signaling in which he first demonstrated signaling by endogenously generated hydrogen peroxide, and mechanisms of induced resistance to oxidative stress in which he demonstrated the induction of glutathione biosynthesis by quinones. He has over 185 peer-reviewed publications.

Personal Interests

    Dr. Forman is married with one daughter. He is an avid football fan for the New York Jets and the USC Trojans. He is a weekend tennis player.

    Aside from Dr. Forman's interests in science and sports, he is the author of a murder mystery called Poisonous Science. He is working on his second novel.
