Kerstin Kleese van Dam has a distinguished research career developing, deploying and operating collaborative computing and data infrastructures on the enterprise, national and international level.

Biography

At present I am an Associate Division Director in the Computational Science and Mathematics Division, as well as Leader of the Scientific Data Management Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. I am involved in a range of data management research projects in domains reaching from new technologies for scientific experiments in extreme scale data to semantic and data management and analysis systems for Real Time and Co-analysis for Chemical Imaging, integrated Regional Earth Systems Modeling (iRESM), Climate Science for a Sustainable Energy Future (CSSEF), Data Analytics for the Future Power Grid and HighEnergy Physics (BELLE II).

In the past I have led a number of larger research and IT support groups based around the support of scientific research work, with a strong emphasis on scientific data management. These roles have included:

* The Director Computing for the Biomedical Sciences Faculty at the University College London, one of Europe’s largest and most productive centres for biomedical sciences.

* The departmental senior management of the UK Science and Technologies Facilities Council ( STFC formerly CCLRC) e-Science Centre.

* The Program Manager for the Integrated e-Science Infrastructure Program for experimental Facilities at STFC.

I have a broad technical background reaching from System Administration and High Performance Computing to advanced Data Management and Leading Edge e-Science Technologies, coupled with many years of experience in programme and project management, strategic planning, IT service operation, stakeholder management and communication, and risk and financial management.

I have been involved in a range of high level strategic activities including Fit For the Future, Environmental Science Strategy and Synchrotron Radiation Facility closure at CCLRC and development of the Computing Strategy for PNNL.

My scientific interests are foremost in the areas of scientific data management and exploitation.
