Successfully transitioned into a leadership position in healthcare security management with Baptist Health South Florida. Ashford Univeristy selects Michael D'Angelo as "Outstanding Alumni of the Month"

By: Michael S D'Angelo, CPP, CSC, CHPA

Author and Security Professional Michael D'Angelo Named Ashford University Outstanding Alum of the Month

Michael D’Angelo enjoyed a successful 20-year career in the City of South Miami Police Department, rising to the rank of captain. But when he wanted to move on to a new phase in his career, D’Angelo needed a college degree. He earned his bachelor of arts in social and criminal justice from Ashford University in 2009 and has gone on to establish himself in a second career in security management. On top of everything else, he has also become a published author. For all of his achievements, D’Angelo has been named Ashford’s outstanding alum of the month.

“The degree became a key factor in my successful transition to private sector security management upon retiring from the police department,” he said. “When I was hired by Baptist Health South Florida’s Department of Emergency Preparedness and Security, having a four-year degree was an essential element to being offered the position.”

D’Angelo was apprehensive about pursuing a degree online and was especially concerned about the technical aspects of online education. But Ashford’s online platform was easy to use and D’Angelo found appropriate resources available to answer his questions. He also enjoyed the genuine sense of camaraderie with his fellow students. “There is a school spirit you can feel,” he said. “Even though you do not meet your fellow students face to face, there is still a connection. I stay in touch with many through social media.”

Inspired by a desire to help others transition into private sector security management, D’Angelo decided to chronicle his journey in a book. “Although I consider my transition a success, it was not without struggle and a few speed bumps along the way. I chronicled some of these challenges in my book with the hope that it will serve as a guide for many other transitioning police and military personnel.” The book, From Police to Security Professional: A Guide to a Successful Career Transition, will be published in January 2015.

“A key chapter in the book is promoting advanced education,” D’Angelo said. “Again, I use myself as the example. I did not complete my bachelor’s degree until later in life. It is never too late to return and the increased popularity of online education – like the one available from Ashford – makes it even more possible.”
