Elizabeth Yuriev
Elizabeth Yuriev is a Senior Lecturer of medicinal chemistry at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Monash University, Melbourne, Australia), a foundation member and the Secretary of the Association of Molecular Modellers of Australasia, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Molecular Recognition (John Wiley & Sons).
Biography
Dr Elizabeth Yuriev is an experienced molecular modeller and has been involved in a range of computational projects including protein and nucleic acid modelling and peptide and carbohydrate docking. Her research outcomes include 69 publications in peer-reviewed journals (including several in high-impact journals such as PNAS, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling, and Chemical Society Reviews), 3 book chapters, and 1 scholarly book. She has communicated 89 conference presentations. Five of her studies have been featured on the covers of Combinatorial Chemistry and High Throughput Screening, Human Vaccines, Australian Journal of Chemistry, and Nucleic Acids Research.Her original contributions to the field of include (i) carbohydrate docking methodologies; (ii) novel site mapping approaches; and (iii) structural insights into protein-ligand interactions.
Dr Yuriev’s research group is interested in studying interactions of carbohydrate ligands and glycopeptides with proteins by molecular modelling. These studies shed light on the way proteins recognise carbohydrate and peptide ligands (PNAS 2003, Immunology and Cell Biology 2005 and 2007, Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling 2009, Molecular Immunology 2009, Expert Opinion in on Biological Therapy 2009 and 2011, Glycobiology 2010, Biopolymers 2011, Frontiers in Immunology 2011, PLoS One 2012). This work has major implications for understanding how the immune system recognises, with exquisite specificity, a large variety of carbohydrate structures. Specifically, it revealed how antibodies and lectins can utilise similar mechanisms for binding to the same series of carbohydrate antigens and how anti-carbohydrate antibodies cross-react with peptides.
Work on mapping protein-ligand interactions led to the development of AutoMap (Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling 2013). This tool is freely available to researches world-wide (sourceforge.org).
Dr Yuriev is recognised as a leading expert in Structural Glycobiology, which is illustrated by publication in 2012 of the book “Structural Glycobiology” for Taylor & Francis Group/CRC press (ISBN:9781439854600), co-edited with A/Prof Paul Ramsland.
