Biography

Cherilyn G. Murer, J.D., C.R.A. is the President and CEO of Murer Consultants, Inc., having founded the firm in 1985. Murer Consultants, Inc. is a legal-based healthcare management consulting firm with integrated expertise from the regulatory, financial and operational perspective. Murer Consultants has a national client base representing hospitals and health systems, academic medical centers, large physician group practices and publicly traded healthcare related companies. Ms. Murer is a sought after lecturer and educator who focuses her attention on assisting clients navigate through the complexities of today’s healthcare delivery system.

Ms. Murer has a robust academic background, and has always been committed to the advancement of higher education.  She currently serves on the Dean’s International Council at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, providing guidance to the University on issues of international importance and new policy initiatives. Since 2003, Ms. Murer has held an appointment to the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law in the Department of Family Medicine, where she conducts Grand Round Lectures on trends and key issues in healthcare, targeted at both faculty and residents.  In May 2005 Ms. Murer received a gubernatorial appointment with Senate confirmation to Northern Illinois University’s Board of Trustees, and has since been reappointed. During her terms, she has served as Chairman and is currently a member of the Executive board. Ms. Murer and her husband, Michael, have provided a philanthropic gift to NIU to establish the ‘Murer Initiative’ as a forum for scholarly discussion, policy analysis and cross disciplinary integration of medicine, law, technology and finance, in order to further promote academic growth and excellence. In 2014 Ms. Murer was appointed to the Advisory Council of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and has recently been nominated to the Institute’s Board of Directors.

As a skilled and experienced professional in the healthcare industry, she has spoken and moderated at major national events, including the National Democratic Governor’s Association Policy Conference and the World Congress-Patient Flow and Emergency Management Summit. As a celebrated educator, she has given keynote speeches at Institutions of higher education such as Northwestern University, Lewis University, and Northern Illinois University.
In February 2010, she was inducted into the prestigious Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

Ms. Murer has been featured on the cover of Modern Healthcare, a Crain Publication, with a lead story on the need for national standardization of Medicare regulations.  She has been a columnist for Rehab Management Magazine since 1993.  Her column “Issues and Trends” focuses on timely and often controversial subjects impacting the delivery of health care.   In April of 2011, Ms. Murer was invited to present the 18th annual Francis X Riley Lecture on professionalism and ethics.  She joined the ranks of such notable previous lecturers as Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan; Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride and the Honorable Abner J. Mikva.   Cherilyn and Michael Murer subsequently funded a multi-year lecture series to further integrate a practical approach to professionalism and ethics into the law school curriculum at Northern Illinois University.

Ms. Murer has developed specialized expertise in proton therapy serving as Chair of the Northern Illinois Proton Therapy and Research Center, a project in conjunction with Fermilab, Argonne National Laboratory and Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital.   Her concern for the future direction of health care within our country had previously prompted her to accept an appointment by Vice President George Bush to serve as National Co-Chair, Disability Coalition. She was subsequently appointed as President Bush’s National Co-Chair “Access to Opportunity Committee”.
