I was born and reared on a wheat and livestock farm in Western Oklahoma. I spent 33 years in Agricultural Research in charge of projects in the Great Plains of the United States, and in cooperation with scientists from Israel. After retirement from USDA, ARS, I worked as principle Hydrogeologist for Mitretek Systems for 14 years.

Biography

Environmental Remediation:  Developed the concept and design requirements for the evapotranspiration (ET) landfill cover.  Evaluated engineering design models and wrote a complete library of technical documents about the ET landfill cover.  Wrote protocol for phytostabilization for the Air Force. Responsible for remedial systems evaluations; site closure strategies; and third party review of technical plans for landfill, groundwater, and soil remediation.  
Research:  Research engineer in charge of developing new methods to effectively manage water for dryland crop production, control non-point pollution, establish native grass, reclaim minelands, recharge groundwater, and develop a hydrogeological model for the Southern High Plains.
Professional societies:  Fellow, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Civil Engineering, American Society of Agronomy/Soil Science Society of America, Professional Hydrologist, American Institute of Hydrology.  member of Sigma Tau, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    I wrote 232 research papers, and one book. I conducted research in water conservation for dry lands, ground water recharge, erosion control, grass establishment, soil improvement, hydrogeology, surface water runoff, water measurement, pioneered in the use of neutron meters for measuring soil water content, developed the conservation bench terrace that utilizes surface runoff water in dry climates to increase crop yield by 50 %, designed a complete water treatment system that clarified 60 acre-feet of muddy water and successfully recharged it into the ogallala aquifer, first to measure surface runoff from drylands of the Southern High Plains of the USA, and was research leader for brush control, grass establishment, management of runoff from drylands, and ground water recharge.  During my 2nd career, I applied my engineering research experience in hydrology, hydrogology, soil physics, fluid mechanics, soils, agronomy and geochemistry to technical problems encountered by the U. S. Air Force, Navy and Army Corps of Engineers in remediation of contaminated sites at military bases.  Following that work, I wrote and published the book "Evapotranspiration Covers for Landfills and Waste Sites", CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group, 2009.
