Dr. Frank Liou is the Michael and Joyce Bytnar Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department, Missouri S&T. He has served as the Director of the Manufacturing Engineering Program at Missouri S&T since 1999. He has published a book on Rapid Prototyping and Engineering Applications, along with over 350 technical papers. Dr. Liou’s research has been focusing on additive manufacturing, including design, prototyping, and testing. Dr. Liou is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Biography

• Dr. Liou is the co-founder and has served as the Director of the Manufacturing Engineering Program at Missouri S&T since the year 1999. He has developed the curriculum through several successful curriculum development funding sources, such as SME Education Foundation, NSF, Boeing, Ford Motors, General Motors, etc.  In order to promote the manufacturing interest at Missouri S&T, he has helped to establish two manufacturing scholarship endowment programs for students who are interested in manufacturing.
• Dr. Liou’s research has been focusing on additive manufacturing, and has generated fundamental discoveries relevant to design and manufacturing. His research team has developed an innovative hybrid manufacturing process that integrates a direct laser deposition process and a CNC machining process for rapid manufacturing of high-performance metals with precision. The resulting surface quality of the final product is similar to the industrial milling capability. Therefore, the hybrid process is potentially a very competitive process for fabrication and repair of fully dense metallic parts with precision requirements. This work has been extensively recognized. The related work was selected as most important innovations at Missouri S&T in years 2013 and 2015.  
• LAMP Lab’s work has been funded by Army Research Office, Air Force Research Laboratory, Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, and Naval Air Systems Command to develop the next generation additive manufacturing processes. Several companies have also participated in the effort. Several related papers have been awarded as the best papers in various conferences (in years 1997, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018), including some published in Nature: Scientific Report.
• The involvement of several multidisciplinary service activities has provided Dr. Liou the experience and insight on how to effectively conduct multidisciplinary teamwork. The coordination of interdisciplinary manufacturing program allows him to see the values and opportunities for multiple departments to work together. As a team, they have successfully received several curriculum development funding, such as SME Education Foundation, NSF, Boeing, Ford Motors, General Motors, etc. He also had the opportunity to help set up two scholarship programs for students in the manufacturing emphasis and manufacturing related areas. The coordination of Intelligent Manufacturing Processes, Equipment and Systems research group within Intelligent Systems Center allows him to understand the research strengths and capabilities of many faculty members on campus.
• Dr. Liou has received Outstanding Teacher Awards in years 1993, 2005, 2006; Faculty Research Awards in years 1993, 1994, 1995, 2011, 2015; and Outstanding Service Awards in years 1994, 2000, 2007. Balanced teaching, research, and service activities, and these scholarly activities have been extensively recognized. He is a fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
