Roger’s area of expertise and consulting is in haul road design for surface mining and the provision, rehabilitation or improved design and management of mine roads. He is the co-author of numerous peer reviewed publications in the field and also runs international workshop training in mine road design for mines and consultants alike. He is the co-author of the new book on ‘Mining Haul Roads – Theory and Practice’ which is set to become the go-to reference for surface mine road design.

Biography

Dr Roger Thompson has some 25 years industry and academic experience, with over 20 years experience in the field of surface mine haul road design, construction and management. Roger has undertaken numerous contact research, applied research and consulting assignments, centered on surface mining transportation and the provision, rehabilitation or improved design and management of open-pit, strip-, terrace and quarry- mining haul roads in Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, North and South America.

Following a number of years in mining production to qualify as a Mine Manager, he occupied professorial positions at several world-renowned mining engineering departments in South Africa and Australia, and a former Technology Leader with Mining3 Australia.

He was also guest researcher at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health – Spokane Research Laboratory (USA) and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for further study in the United States with both NIOSH and Colorado School of Mines.

He currently operates as an independent consultant through Mineravia Consulting

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Roger provides the mining industry with research and consultancy services related to surface mine haul road design, construction, management and training.  Road designs for new surface mining operations, as well as optimization, up-grades and rehabilitation of operating mine haul roads are provided, tailored to client requirements, using state of the art design technologies and appropriate technical capabilities.

    Roger has undertaken numerous contract and applied research and consulting assignments, centered on surface mining transportation productivity issues and the provision, rehabilitation or improved design and management of mine haul roads for many of the worlds leading surface mining operations He is the author/ co-author of numerous peer reviewed publications, conference papers and technical reports for clients in the field of mine haul road design.

    Specific consulting expertise covers;

        Structural design of new mine haul roads or up-grading and re-design for larger vehicles;
        Functional design, selection or modification of mine haul road wearing course materials;
        Haul road performance surveys and rehabilitation/repair strategies;
        Bench-marking haul road performance, operation and management strategies;
        Real-time haul road maintenance management systems;
        Haul road design audits and development of SOP's for mine road construction;
        Evaluation of stabilizers, dust palliatives, product selection and management strategies;
        Road maintenance management scheduling solutions for optimal performance and safety.

    He is also a member of the Haul Road Optimization Alliance - an industry group who collaborate to develop unique solutions to mine road design performance improvement and collaborates with Min-cad in software development for the structural design of mine haul roads.

    Roger also delivers Center for Pavement Engineering Education (CPEE) courses in Mine Road Design and Construction at various State centers annually.  Full details available from CPEE.
