A soil scientist by training but over the years have transformed himself from lab to landscape scale. Currently working in natural resource management at Institute of Agricultural Science, BHU, Varanasi and integrating disciplines and institutions to work in a consortium to solve the on ground problems of small farm holders.

Biography

Dr Amitava Rakshit , an IIT, Kharagpur alumnus is the faculty member in the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry at Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, UP, India. His research areas include: Nutrient use efficiency, Simulations modeling, Organic farming, Integrated Nutrient Management and bioremediation. His consulting capabilities are: Composting Techniques, Soil Health Management, Input quality Control. He was involved in "Participatory Research" and "Lab to Land" Programmes of ICAR; Dept. of Agricultural Cooperation, Govt. of India; Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal ;NHB, New Delhi and NHM for on farm demonstrations of agro-technologies in cerals/pulses/oilseeds/Cash crops/vegetables/Fruits. Actively involved in imparting training and dissemination of technical knowledge and information to diversified end users. He has supervised approximately five research projects, many in partnership with industry. He is widely acknowledged for his skills in linking research with the broader community in regional languages. He has been working closely with undergraduate and post-graduate students in BHU presently. He has visited Norway,Finland,Denmark,France,Austria Russia,Thailand, Egypt, Turkey number of occasions pertaining to his research work and presentation. Dr.Rakshit has previously worked at Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal in research extension and implementation roles. He is the fellow of Society of Earth Scientists.He is presently the Chief Editor of International Journal of Agriculture Environment and Biotechnology (NAAS: 4.69) .He was awarded with TWAS.Nxt by TWAS, Italy ; Biovision Nxt Fellow by Biovision, Lyon, France for the year 2008-09. He is serving as review college member of British Ecological Society, London since 2011-12. He was awarded with  Best Teacher’s Award by BHU (ICAR, New Delhi)  both at under graduate and post graduate layer in 2012 and 2014. He is a member of Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition of FAO, Rome and Commission on Ecosystem Management of International Union for Conservation of Nature. He is the author of eighteen books (Springer, CRC,CBS,ATINER, ICFAI, Kalyani , Jain Publishers, IBDC and DPS). He also published numerous articles/reviews in professional journals.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    I have worked on arbusular mycorrhizae, nitrogen and phosphorus transformations in soil, bioreclamation, biopriming, agricultural water management,  soil and plant nutrition, nutrient cycling, sustainable intensification, ecosystem services, on-site and off-site impacts of nutrient management practices. I have elegance to work with the communities through participatory research for development. I work in teams and take pleasure in team work. Along with research I also like management of extension and mobilising resources for undertaking innovation in teaching .
