Senior Research Associate
University of Colorado

Charles F. (Chuck) Kutscher has spent his career advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy. He has focused his work on climate change solutions and communications. He led a major study on climate change solutions, developed a taught a college course on this topic, and wrote a column for Solar Today magazine. He led an effort at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to expand work on zero-energy buildings to zero-carbon urban districts.

Biography

Charles F. (Chuck) Kutscher is a Fellow and Senior Research Associate of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute, a joint institute between the University of Colorado-Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He served as the Director of the Buildings and Thermal Sciences Center at NREL from 2013 until his retirement in 2018. He has worked in the field of renewable energy for over four decades, during which time he has led research in solar heating and cooling, building energy efficiency, solar industrial process heat, geothermal power, and concentrating solar power. He is a Fellow of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and served as the Society’s chair in 2000 and 2001. He chaired two national solar energy conferences (2006 and 2012) and led the ASES study, Tackling Climate Change in the U.S., a 200-page report detailing how energy efficiency and six renewable energy technologies can greatly reduce U.S. carbon emissions by 2030. He led NREL’s transition from zero-energy buildings to zero-carbon urban districts. He is a frequent speaker on the topic of climate change solutions and recently traveled to China and India to spread the word on this topic. He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Colorado School of Mines. In his spare time he enjoys mountain biking, river running, and scuba diving/snorkeling.
