Biography

Professor Hassan has been in the university teaching and research for more than two and a half decades. His teaching and research interest encompasses environmental health, environmental management, spatial epidemiology, and spatial modelling. He received his MSc in Geographical Information for Development (GID) from Durham University, UK in 1997 with the British ODA Scholarship and later, he completed his PhD in Social Sciences and Health from the same University in 2003 with the Commonwealth Scholarships Programme. He was a Commonwealth Fellow of the Institute of Hazard and Risk Resilience (IHRR), Durham University in 2009-10. He is acting as an editor of several peer-reviewed International Journals. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with TIBG) and member of several international and national professional bodies.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Teaching and research of Professor Hassan delves in groundwater arsenic poisoning, water quality, air quality, medical waste, spatial modelling, environmental health risk, environmental justice, environmental impact assessment (EIA), and environmental management plan (EMP). Apart from his book on “Arsenic in Groundwater: Poisoning and Risk Assessment”, he wrote a significant number of research papers and book chapters. In addition, he has also served as a consultant to a number of world bodies, including the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, UNICEF, and World Health Organization in the fields of climate change and human health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), air quality monitoring (AQI), medical waste management (MWM), digital elevation model (DEM), and waste water.

Personal Interests

    In addition to photography and travelling, he loves to work for the poor and disadvantaged group in the society. At present, he is involved in providing nonformal education to the poor children in urban slums. He is also involved in charitable works to change the quality of life to the poor and disadvantaged groups in different areas in Bangladesh.
