Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

Burt Hamrell is an emeritus professor in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Vermont where he spent 30 years in research on the physiology and pathophysiology of heart muscle mechanics and in teaching cardiovascular physiology to medical and allied health students. He also was director of the medical physiology course at Vermont. He continues to be invited to teach cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology at Vermont and in other medical schools. He also currently serves on the board of two USMLE review websites. He uses his combined background in internal medicine and cardiology and in cardiovascular physiology to enliven his teaching and ensure that students understand the relevance of what they are learning. Recently he has begun to develop electronic learning modules to foster active learning among the students he teaches. Development of these electronic resources has culminated in a publication expected in January 2018.

Burt's website has information about the forthcoming publication of his book and electronic resources. Also, there is a complete list of his publications. You can reach his website by clicking on the link below.

Personal Interests

After retiring in 1996 Burt has devoted himself to teaching and authoring. A continuing interest in the history of medicine led to the publication of an analysis of the autopsy of John Paul Jones with presentation of new conclusion about the probable cause of death.

Teaching in Caribbean medical schools has led to a passionate interest in SCUBA diving, most recently in Saba. In the summer he savors the Vermont countryside on his motorcycle, taking the roads less traveled. He and his wife love theater and take advantage of living not too far from Montreal and of the delights of Vermont summer theater. Travel has included hiking trips to England, including walking the length of Hadrian's Wall, followed by theater in London. A winter treat is what has become and annual visit to Quebec City in February, cold, snowy and uncrowded!

There is, of course, the treat of activities with our children and grandchildren. There are four grandsons and many of the Hamrell travels have been with them.
