I was a metallurgist at the age of 16, working in the quality control laboratories of the British Oxygen Company, which sponsored me for further studies, first at the East Ham College of Technology, and then the City of London Polytechnic. I did my Ph.D. at Cambridge, beginning 1976 and have been there ever since. It is a truly wonderful place.  My hobby is long distance cycling, and one day hopes to do the journey from Lands End to Joan O'Groats, a distance of about 1100 miles. It is good to dream. And the aim may turn out to be greater than the reach. We shall see.
