Arul Earnest

Associate Professor (Biostatistics)

Arul is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. Previously, he was the Director of the Centre for Quantitative Medicine (CQM) at Duke-NUS in Singapore, a collaboration between Duke USA and the National University of Singapore. His current research interest is in Bayesian spatio-temporal models. For more than 15 years, Arul has provided consultative and collaborative methodological input to various collaborators and researchers.

Biography

The outcome for some of this collaborative work has been more than 125 publications in a variety of peer-reviewed international medical journals, including BMC Health Services Research, BMJ and JAMA, 2 book chapters, 13 successful grant applications, more than 130 conference proceedings, as well as more than 50 invited talks and presentations. Arul has also been invited to sit in the judging panel in numerous competitions including the Singapore General Hospital Annual Scientific Meeting, Singapore Health and Biomedical Congress and Pitch for Fund, Medicine Academic Clinical Program, Singapore General Hospital, where he has had the opportunity to critically evaluate various clinical research projects. Arul was awarded the status of Chartered Statistician (C.Stat) by the Royal Statistical Society in London in 2003, and has received several research awards including the recent University of Sydney International Research Collaboration Award in 2013 and the SingHealth Partners in Education Award: RISE award for mentors and teachers of resident clinicians. He has also taught in formal courses on epidemiology, health statistics, multivariate analysis, grantsmanship and statistical software classes. In addition to mentoring statisticians, clinicians in residency programs and clinician-researchers, he has also taught successive batches of medical students and Masters in Public Health students both in Australia and Singapore. Arul has previously served as a Local Review Panel (LRP) member for the National Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist Individual Research Grant Scheme, as well as the National Healthcare Group Domain-Specific Review Board in Singapore.He has been in several organising committees for national as well as international conferences, including the International Society of Bayesian Analysis (ISBA) conference in 2008.
