PROFILE

I am a hard working person with many transferable skills. I can communicate on many levels, from student to Professor, as I believe if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it. I am now looking for a new challenge where I can use my previous experience to the full.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
March 2016 – Present
I am currently offering a private tutoring service for math’s A ‘level and above.
January 2014- Present
I am currently collaborating in the writing of an encyclopedia for Medical Statistics, in between working on projects on which my help has been sought. This is due to be published in December 2016

July 2010- Present
I started a period of working from home as a Freelance Medical Statistician and being a house husband, supporting my two sons and my wife.

September 2006- April 2009
I worked as a consulting Medical Statistician for Professor A.H Gershlick and with Professor K.R Adams on the Scope Project “scoring for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Events”. At times I worked with three doctors as well as Professors Gershlick and Abrams, and this led to the publication of three abstracts and one poster (see below), but the main project was paused in April 2009 at the analytic stage (I handed it over to the department’s statistician in July 2010)

October 2001- 2015
I began working with Margaret Hidderley, a Macmillan Nurse Specialist employed by Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust on the effects of Autogenic Training (AT): http://www.autogenic-therapy.org.uk/) on the outcomes for ladies with early stage breast cancer. AT is often referred to as “westernised medication” a form of self-hypnosis. The pilot study strongly supports the need for a full-scale study and we have been actively pursuing funding to do this.

March 2005-Present
In March 2005 I founded the mailing list “MedStats” (http://groups.google.com/group/MedStats). This list promotes open discussions on statistical issues raised by anyone who chooses to join. It is open to view by anyone on the internet but to post a question or to contribute to the discussion one must join. I am active in contributing to the discussions.

July 2008- 2015
In July 2008 I replied to an advertisement from J. Golson Media (USA) looking for authors to write sections of “The Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Society”. I successfully submitted a number of articles. I have recently taken this up again. I am also currently co-authoring a 1000 page long Encyclopedia in Medical Statistics.




July 2005-July 2006
I have also worked as a Medical Writer for Framingham BC, writing abstracts for papers. Framingham collated and published these abstracts and then sent them on to clinicians who welcomed them.

July 2006-December 2006
I tutored an undergraduate Psychologist in Medical Statistics.

July 2006- December 2006
In December 2006 I completed a NCFE course in Access Auditing for Disabled People (NQF Level Equivalence 3). I then, in my spare time, worked with the Leicestershire Centre for Integrated Living (LCIL) to visit buildings as requested to check for suitable access arrangements. I am a Trustee on the Board for LCIL.

July 2002- July 2003
Over this time I worked at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) as the chief statistician for the National Acute Myeloid Leukemia Clinical Trial 15.

September 2000-June 2002
From September 2000 until I moved to BCTU I was the Medical Statistician at the Southern Derbyshire Acute Hospitals Trust, helping researchers at the two hospitals: Derby City and the Royal.

September 1999-October 2000
I gained a distinction in the summer project of an Advanced MSc in “Medical Statistics and Information Technology” at Leicester/De Montfort Universities in October 2000. I also won the Diane Jackson Memorial Prize for services rendered in support of the Health Service.

1996
In 1996 I took the Open University M101 Math’s Foundation Course, scoring 88%.

July 1983- July 1999
Before adopting a career in Medical Statistics I worked as the Quality Manager in Betts (supplier to Pharmaceutical Companies, July 1997-July 1999) and in a number of Clinical Diagnostics companies (September 1983-July 1994) Amersham International, Kodak Clinical Diagnostics, Johnson & Johnson, EURO DPC. I managed validation projects (Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification and Performance Qualification) and the introduction of Projects into the company from customers or from the main site into the company. I managed the company’s quality systems through three FDA inspections, ensured that the company succeeded in ISO9001 audits and that the company met the quality standards required from our customers. At EURO-DPC I recruited and managed 17 staff.

“Scoring for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Events”. Aim to develop a PCI equivalent to Cardiologists’ Euro SCORE. To allow clinicians to report on PCI outcomes adjusted according to patient and procedural risk.

I am a Parish Councilor to Bagworth and Thornton Paris Council. I am a governor at my son’s academies. I am a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. I enjoy rambling, photography and eating out with my family. I have a wide taste in music, from my father’s generation to keeping up with my sons.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

Up to 2000, over a period of 17 years, I was permanently employed, full time, working in quality management (QA, QC, validation, new products). I was instrumental in taking 2 companies through FDA inspections. I graduated and gained an Advanced Medical Statistics and Information Technology  MSc in September 2000 (distinction in the 3 month dissertation) and have worked freelance from July 2005 making use of this relatively rare skill-set: Freelance Medical Statistician and Quality Expert. My maxim is "Persistence and Determination Alone are Omnipotent". This combines with a refusal to give in on any particular problem; rather I enjoy problem-solving (I joined MENSA for its puzzles). I am currently near the end of co-authoring an Encyclopoedia of Medical Statistics.
