Biography

Joseph E. Fleckenstein graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BS degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in electrical engineering. Subsequent to graduation he completed over 44 courses in a variety of subjects. Following college he spent two years as a commissioned officer in the US Army and commanded a platoon of 35 men overseas. He has been a registered professional engineer for many years. Today he is an electrical engineering consultant.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Fleckenstein has been employed as an engineer with both manufacturing firms and engineering firms. For last 30 years he has been actively involved with the design and modifications of electrical power generating plants. His specialization is electrical systems and controls. Over the years he has published a number of technical papers and online courses (through PDHOnline) for registered professional engineers. He is a member of IEEE, a life member of ISA and a certified IAEI electrical inspector.

Personal Interests

    Joseph is an active member of a photography club where he frequently participates in competitions. Languages are a hobby, and he speaks both French and German moderately well. He has traveled extensively to Europe, the Middle East and the Orient. He is an enthusiastic reader of novels and short stories, and occasionally writes short stories. Senior Membership in IEEE

I recently received a letter from the president of IEEE that advised me that I had been elected to "Senior Membership." She added that of the organization’s roughly 423,000 members worldwide, only 10% receive the senior membership. So, I am proud of the recognition.

Induction into Eta Kappa Nu

In October, 2016 I was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu, the honors society of IEEE. The accolade was in large part a recognition of my publication of a textbook and seven online courses, all of which were on the subject of electrical engineering. The event took place at my alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
