Rhonda has been with the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at NC State University for almost 20 years, providing education and technical assistance on vermicomposting, composting, recycling and waste reduction for people in more than 80 countries. Rhonda is considered one of the leading authorities on vermiculture and vermicomposting, and organizes an annual conference on large-scale vermicomposting that draws participants from all over the world.

Biography

Rhonda Sherman is an extension specialist with the Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University. She provides education about and technical assistance with solid waste management throughout the United States and has assisted people in 83 countries. She has conducted numerous training courses and workshops and has created a variety of publications on solid waste management and sustainability issues for extension educators, farmers, recycling coordinators, worm growers, teachers, students, commercial and institutional managers, consultants and the general public. Her key topics include vermicomposting, composting, source reduction, reuse, and recycling. Since 2001, Rhonda has offered annually the nations's only conference on large-scale vermicomposting, helping more than 1,000 people to start up or expand earthworm farms.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    I have a full-time appointment in extension in the area of solid waste management. In North Carolina and nationally, I have taken on a number of leadership roles in the areas of vermicomposting and composting. As Director of NCSU's Compost Training Facility, I conduct research and training programs on composting and vermicomposting.  I have served on the Board of Directors for state and national composting councils. A co-founder of the National Backyard Composting Program, I also served as a Master Composter Trainer for this program.
