Scott X. Chang


I was trained as a soil scientist, with specialization in forest soils and biogeochemistry. I also have research interest in climate change, agroforestry, and land reclamation. I am Chair of the Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition Commission of the International Union of Soil Science and was Chair of the Forest, Range and Wildland Soils Division of the Soil Science Society of America and and Chair of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop.

Biography

I have supervised more than 80 postgraduate students, visiting graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists from different countries. I have authored/co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed articles and was awarded the University of Alberta Annual Killam Professorship in 2014. I am currently serving as the special issues editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science, as an editorial board member for Biology and Fertility of Soils and Pedosphere, and as a subject editor for Journal of Soils and Sediments. I have served as an associate editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science, as an editorial board member for Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis, and as a guest editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science, Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of Soils and Sediments and Journal of Environmental Quality.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Forest soil processes (N and C cycling), forest fertilization and nutrition, application of 15N/13C tracers in forest soils research, soil microbial ecology, land reclamation, carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, and agroforestry.
