When I returned from Italy, I joined the lab in Phoenix, Arizona, and subsequently began a doctoral program at Arizona State University, where I taught for two years.
Our family moved to Michigan, where we have remained ever since. I have been on the faculty of Grand Valley State University since 1988.
The summer of 1999 marked my first visit to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In the past thirteen years, I have developed deep friendships with Lakota elders and young people. I have been formally honored twice by my Lakota friends.
