The Visual Arts Research Institute in Edinburgh (VARIE) was established in 1999 as a pioneering partnership between the National Galleries, the National Museums of Scotland, the University of Edinburgh, the University of St Andrews and the Edinburgh College of Art. Its work promotes international and exploratory scholarship in art history and visual culture.
