The deposed government of Alfredo Stroessner had held power in Paraguay for close to 35 years, a political longevity then surpassed only by Bulgaria's Todor Zhivkov, North Korea's Kim ll-song, and Jordan's King Hussein.

RIORDAN ROETT is the Sarita and Don Johnston Professor and Director of Latin American Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at The John Hopkins University. He has authored or edited numerous articles and books on Brazil's political development, including Brazil in the Sixties, The Politics of Foreign Aid in the Brazilian Northeast, Brazil in the Seventies, and three previous editions of Brazil: Politics in a Patrimonial Society.
