This text covers topics such as sinkhole formation and regional studies of sinkholes and karst. Issues addressed are taken from the 8th multidiscilinary conference on this subject and chart the characteristics of sinkholes and karst as well as their environmental repercussions.

Sinkhole formation; regional studies of sinkholes and karst; evaluating the risk and remediating the damage from sinkhole collapse; groundwater flow and contaminant movement in karst; treatment of environmental problems in karst; using geophysics in karst investigations; field trip guide; keynote address by P.G. Marinos; tunnelling and mining in karstic terrane; an engineering challenge.

    Biography

Dr. Beck has more than 30 years of experience in hydrogeology and engineering geology, including research and project management relating to groundwater, geophysics, geotechnical evaluations, and surficial processes and landforms. He is an internationally recognized specialist in karst hydrogeology and hazards assessment. Since 1992 he has directed PELA's office in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Prior to joining PELA, Dr. Beck served for nine years as the first and only Director of the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute at the University of Central Florida. He was responsible for program development at the new research institute
