Biography

Diane Herrmann is Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics at the University of Chicago. She has taught undergraduate mathematics for many years and especially enjoys using the Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) method of instruction. She was the lead teacher in the Young Scholars Program (YSP) for mathematically talented seventh and eighth graders, and taught number theory and geometry to these eager learners, many of them from the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). She teaches in the University's Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) to train high school mathematics teachers for CPS; she appreciates UTEP's integration of clinical experience and coursework, as well as its focus on race, class, and culture in teaching and learning. Diane was awarded the University's Quantrell Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 1988.

Diane is also a certified needlework teacher through the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN); she has won numerous awards for her work in NAN's certification program, and has been awarded several ribbons for her original designs. Her piece "Walking the Water's Edge,"  featuring a bargello pattern based on a trigonometric function, is featured in the 2013 AMS Calendar of Mathematical Imagery. She contributed a chapter, "Diaper Patterns in Needlepoint" to the volume "Crafting by Concepts". Diane enjoys including multicultural ideas in her designs and finding ways to combine mathematics and the needlearts.
