Sandra L. Arlinghaus is a mathematical geographer by training who believes that pure mathematics, particularly geometry, is the key to the understanding and the creation of both spatial analysis and spatial synthesis.

Education

    She holds a Ph.D. in theoretical geography (The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) and other degrees and advanced education in mathematics (from Vassar College, the University of Chicago, the University of Toronto, and Wayne State University). She holds an M.A. in Geography from Wayne State University, an A. B. in Mathematics from Vassar College, and a High School Diploma from the University of Chicago, Laboratory Schools.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    She has published over 300 books and articles, many in peer-reviewed publications. She continues innovative approaches in publication as creator of Solstice: An Electronic Journal of Geography and Mathematics, perhaps the world’s first online
    peer-reviewed publication (1990-), and as co-creator with William C. Arlinghaus and Frank Harary of John Wiley & Sons first eBook in 2002.

Personal Interests

    She also enjoys history, zoology, foreign languages, classical music, cooking, the planning of tournament duplicate bridge events, and community service, having served nine years on the City of Ann Arbor Planning Commission (including service as its Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary),five years on the City of Ann Arbor Environmental Commission, and five years on the Ann Arbor Police Department’s Neighborhood Watch Citizen Advisory Panel.
