Joseph Schafer is Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His research and scholarship focuses on police organizations, citizen perceptions of crime & safety, and emerging issues in crime and justice.
Biography
Joseph A. Schafer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He holds a bachelors degree from the University of Northern Iowa and graduate degrees from Michigan State University. Dr. Schafer’s research focuses on policing, organizational change, leadership, communities and crime, citizen perceptions of police, and futures research in policing. He was the 2006-2007 President of Police Futurists International, is a member of the PFI/FBI Futures Working Group, served on the advisory board for the Public Safety Leadership Development Consortium, and was a visiting scholar in the Behavioral Science Unit of the FBI Academy (2006-2008). His recent writings include Policing 2020: Exploring the Future of Crime, Communities and Policing (2007, project editor), The Future of Policing: A Practical Guide for Police Leaders and Managers (2012), Effective Leadership in Policing, and research articles appearing in various academic journals and policing periodicals.Areas of Research / Professional Expertise
