Biography
Oliver Bimber became head of the Institute of Computer Graphics at Johannes Kepler University Linz in October 2009. From 2003-2010 he served as a Junior Professor of Augmented Reality at the Media System Science Department of Bauhaus-University Weimar, and as an Interim Professor of Computer Graphics at the Computer Science Department of the Brandenburg University of Technology, Cottbus (2008/2009). He received a Ph.D. (2002) in Engineering from Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, and a Habilitation degree (2007) in Computer Science (Informatik) at Munich University of Technology. From 2001 to 2002 Bimber worked as a senior researcher at the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics in Providence, RI/USA, and from 1998 to 2001 he was a scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in Rostock, Germany. He received the degree of Dipl. Inform. FH (1998) in Scientific Computing from the University of Applied Science Giessen-Friedberg and a B.Sc. (1998) degree in Commercial Computing from the Dundalk Institute of Technology.Bimber co-authored the book "Displays: Fundamentals and Applications" with Rolf R. Hainich, the book "Spatial Augmented Reality" with Ramesh Raskar (MIT), numerous journal articles and many other per-reviewed publications. Since 2005 he has served on the editorial board of the IEEE Computer Magazine. He and his group in Weimar received several scientific awards for their research and inventions including the iENA Gold Medal (2008), the Laval Virtual Award (2002 and 2005), and several best paper and best thesis awards. His students have won scientific competitions, such as the ACM Siggraph Student Research Competition (2006 and 2008), and the ACM Student Research Competition Grand Final (2006) that was presented together with the Turing award. The VIOSO GmbH was founded in his group. Since 2005, VIOSO has received several start-up awards, such as the Innovation Award 2008 (Innovationspreis der Initiative Mittelstand), the German Start-Up Award (Deutscher Gründerpreis, 2nd place) 2007, the Start-Up Award of the Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWT) 2006 (Gründerwettbewerb -- Mit Multimedia erfolgreich starten), and an Exist-Seed Start-Up Award of the Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) 2005.
Bimber's research interests include visual computing, real-time rendering and visualization, computer vision, image analysis and processing, optics, and human visual perception in the context of next-generation display and imaging technologies.
Besides work, he likes flying (glider planes) and spending as much time as possible with his wife, Melanie, and his dog, Bailey. We enjoy running and traveling.
